Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment®

EIPA Certification

Many states require a certificate of competency using the EIPA in order to work as an educational interpreter. For example in Colorado, Iowa and Oklahoma an interpreter must have an EIPA score of at least 3.5 in order to provide interpreting services in the school setting and in Wisconsin and Louisiana an interpreter must have an EIPA score of 3.0. Many states have additional requirements, such as university credit, continuing education units, and criminal background checks.

Some states are using EIPA as a precursor for establishing a certification system. Such plans help interpreters determine the professional development (training, workshops, classes) needed to further educational interpreter abilities.
